The Hindu Pilgrimage To The Sacred Sewer
January 5th 2007 21:48
During the religious festival of Ardh Kumbh Mela, 75 million Hindus will wash in the sacred Ganges River. The pilgrims will come to bathe their sins away, sip the waters, or cremate their dead. Unfortunately the river has become polluted with sewage and garbage!
The $100 million given to the Ganga Action plan 20 years ago to treat the sewage dumped in the river has failed. They blame poor planning, corruption, and everything but themselves. This year hundreds of holymen have threatened mass suicide during the festival to protest the government's inaction. Talk about faith vs. secular, a priest cups the water and brings it to his mouth, but does not drink it. The same person is a professor of hydraulics, and knows the water isn't pure!
