The Great Retarded Debate
September 4th 2010 17:57
Jennifer Aniston came under fire for using the r-word recently. Yes she used the word 'retard' and came under fire.
Seems that there is a movement to abolish the word altogether and make it the equivalent of an insensitive crime when used. Aside from the fact that the only ones it bothers are those who still associate the word to mean the now 'handy capable' crowd!
The word went from 'mentally retarded' to 'mentally handicapped' to 'handicapped' to 'handy capable' just to be sensitive towards the ones that lack mental facilities!
Insensitive as this may sound, I don't believe that words that change in meaning should be deleted from our vocabulary. In today's stress-free society, many may have to take 10 doses of valium to not give a piece of their minds to those that lack common sense!
Meanwhile, in Australia they will soon target the word 'gay'!
