The Day Rock Peaked

July 16th 2007 19:40
If you look at the whole Rock-and-Roll phenomenum from my perspective, there is no doubt that Led Zeppelin was the peak of the entire era. It started with The Beatles, and although it did not end, would peak with Zeppelin. All bands that followed, could not keep up with supercharged Zep and were labeled Zeppelin-wannabes!

Many musicians who tried a new guitar sound, both past and present, found that the god known as Jimmy Page had already done that! Led Zeppelin broke the sound barrier of Rock and none other can surpass. Hard to say what would have become of Rock had drummer, John Bonham, not died too soon. It was obvious that when Page put together the greatest Rock band, he had a well defined goal in mind.

It started with the disbandment of The Yardbirds. Page and John Paul Jones played in Donovan's 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' and Jones asked if he could be part of The New Yardbirds that Page was forming. Page then brought in Plant, who suggested a former band mate, Bonham. Keith Moon, from The Who came up with the band's name. From there, the course of history was changed forever more!

Led Zeppelin moved the world of Rock to new heights as manager Peter Grant asked for and got great royalties for their concerts. Zeppelin wasn't only selling records but cashing in big on concerts which were ALWAYS sold-out. True performers, they would bedazzle their legions of fans with music, lightshows, and fascinating guitar playing by Page.

Their true bread-and-butter may have been the song Stairway to Heaven, but there isn't a Zeppelin song that was a B-side fill in. Zeppelin has influenced all Rock bands, including Heart that performs many cover songs and has had Jones on tour with them.

This is Zep's official site.

Keep in mind that 'the peak' does not mean the end. If this were true, I wouldn't be a Rush fan, and Rush was boldly influenced by Zep...but that's another story!

Again, it is a matter of taste. I loved Zep 3, while some didn't. I loved their single, Hey Hey What Can I Do. Physical Graffiti had it's good and bad points. Houses Of The Holy had many 'good' songs. In Through The Out Door was their last and a somewhat experimental album(mix of Carribean and Rock). Coda SUCKED! Presence never got the recognition it deserved, I believe.

Give me time and I will review individual albums and songs by the artists I write about! ;>

Zep is tough to just pick 10, and Stairway isn't #1 for me!!!
