Sk8tr Boys That Don't Grow Up
May 25th 2008 12:26
For the life of me I can't understand the fascination with skateboards in sports. They may be fun as a young adult, but eventually it is time to hang the skateboard and skateboard image up. Granted that back in the day, the surfer image was that of a young freespirit beach bum. It eventually became an acceptable part of sports and society, too.
Perhaps it isn't the sport side that is the problem but rather the sk8tr boi image that refuses to grow up. Avril Levine made that image stand out in her songs, but she seems to have grown up. That is what most skateboard athletes should do. Unfortunately, some refuse to do so.
The skateboard image is still a big fascination to young teens who idolize the athletes that may be approaching 40. The real kicker is that most professional skateboarders are role models to some. We know what happens when pop stars(Spears, Cyrus, etc.) have a tween fan base, and decide to suddenly grow-up. Their fans tend to follow them while parents go in an uproar.
Now a professional skateboarder decides he's not as old as he is. He is 36, she was 15. Maybe it's time to grow up or not give your sport a bad image.
