Shattered Dreams
January 27th 2007 20:52
As a child, I often fantasized about space travel. I remember how we all glued ourselves to the TV tube whenever NASA was about to launch an aircraft in space. We all worried about John Glenn's safety aboard the Mercury spacecraft. The nation cheered and made him a hero...and eventually a US senator.
I always remember President John F Kennedy expressing a need to continue with the space program, which was more of a race with the USSR, and we did. With the major successes of the Gemini projects, we were ready to go to the moon. I grew up with the Gemini projects and therefore recognised many astronauts, who were basically heroes to starry-eyed youth!
Thus began the Apollo project. Unfortunately, it didn't start out in a victorious fashion. From the Gemini years I knew Virgil Grissom and Edward White, but it was the first time I heard of Roger Chaffee. The strange thing is that after that infamous day, I never forgot his name.
I never really remember Cape Canaveral, but always called it Cape Kennedy. I guess now it is just called NASA's property! Just kidding...sort of! Call it whatever suits you!
January 27, 1967 is the day that my dreams about space were shattered and when idol death became a reality. RIP
