Halloween Controversy
October 18th 2009 14:11
You really can't do something without offending someone. Mixed in the equation is that the offenses are so minor compared to the offenses as a whole plus double-standards. Let me explain this in a way that pertains to Halloween.
If you were to analyze it in detail, I'd say that 90% of Halloween costumes may be deemed offensive to some groups. Lets not get into the biggie that involves a certain type of religion or belief. Devils, witches, goblins, etc., may be deemed offensive to many. Sexy and skimpy outfits may be seen as exploiting sex and sex objects, which some may find offensive. Back in the 50s and 60s some whites would darken their faces to make a racially offensive costumes.
Some costumes are offensive, but maybe people should take them for what they are...a seasonal joke! It's a form of uniqueness and creativity, if you think about it. A few years back there was a controversial subject as to why a Halloween party at an educational institute allowed a suicide bomber-type costume. I'll bet it would have been different if it were a Nazi officer uniform.
This years controversial costume is the illegal alien that is no longer being offered at Target's website. I find it silly that it offends one particular ethnic group. If anything it is poking fun of an illegal 'space alien' not a human alien. It is also funny because an alien with a green card is not illegal. Illegal aliens in the US come from all over the world.
People should just keep in mind that on Halloween there are tricks or treats and sometimes it depends on which end you are on. People should really learn to take a joke and to remember that it is not always about them!
