The New Hunt: Roadkill
April 5th 2008 15:27
I guess if it is fresh kill it makes sense. In Vermont if you don't want to hunt, you can be on the list for roadkill meat! The list is made up of people who get called when there is an accident involving a vehicle and deer, moose, bear, and others.
In many states, including NY, drivers are always allowed to take the dead animal meat if they want it. In a sense I believe this is to actually make the state less liable in some weird way. Vermont will call people on the list if drivers don't want the meat. They can get the call at any time and any day. They are required to go and fetch it in a certain amount of time or it goes to the next one on the list.
It is considered vegetarian/vegan friendly(in a warped way) because the animals weren't hunted, but involved in an accident. The buyer has to process what meat he can. Who knew that the roadkill industry would create jobs and help the taxpayer out. Here we thought Larry, Darryl and Darryl(from Newhart fame) were nuts to eat roadkill!
Once I saw a deer get hit by a quick moving semi, and there was really nothing left but blood and fur!
