In the history of man, there has always been the rise and fall of great empires. Our perception of empires may not be what empires really are. If we focus on the Roman Empire, for example, we might not think of the US as an empire by those standards.
An empire is nothing more than a world power, thus the US does qualify. Many believe the US is ready to fall. Maybe. Although it does seem to be heading toward a to a third world country status.
